City to Travel : Appreciate the beauty of Portugal, Porto in pictures and video -

Porto, Portugal, is one of the country's most important cities and is commonly acknowledged to be the "capital of the north". It is the second largest city after Lisbon.  Porto is listed as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the old town due to its rich heritage of ancient monuments and impressive architecture, to the green spaces that spread their way west from the centre of the city to the expansive shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

One of the main draws of the area is the local wine industry, especially Port wine, which is the mainstay of the area’s viticultural activity. The Douro region has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. One of the best ways to appreciate the extent to which this is the case is from the waters of the river  itself. There are many local boat trips to take tourists to see and learn about the detailed history of the river and the local industry. While the industry ship the wine via trucks instead of the river, the Douro river was the main transport support the wine industry before 1950s when dams were built stopping the river for such function.

The festival of Sao Joao is celebrated in many cities in Portugal, and in a few countries throughout the world, but Porto offer the best experience of celebration among the other cities. Sao Joao festival takes place every year on the night of 23 June and is one of the biggest events in the city’s cultural calendar. It is, however, relatively unknown outside the country, making it a prime choice for travellers looking to experience a taste of the “real Portugal” with an authentic national festival. There is no place better than Porto to do so.

Porto’s Palacio de Cristal, or Crystal palace, is a huge domed pavilion, the Pavilhao Rosa Mota located in the Crystal Palace Gardens. Today's version is a reconstruction of the original one in 1956. The house was home to Carlos Alberto, the King of Piedmont and Sardinia, during his last days in exile in Porto. The Kings Room, where he received his guests, is a fine example of high-quality furnishing and decoration of the time.
